The art world is just beginning to look at cryptocurrencies, virtual currencies such as Bitcoin, as a secure payment option for buyers and sellers.

Blockchain is a digital public ledger or database that can store transactions or information - such as cryptocurrency payments - and is regarded as difficult to hack or forge and cannot be changed.

The event, in association with Christie’s Education and art and culture exhibitions database Vastari, includes guests from across the art, digital and legal world.

Confirmed speakers include Hans Ulrich Obrist, artistic director at the Serpentine Gallery, former minister for culture, communications and creative industries Ed Vaizey, and Kati Price, head of digital media at the Victoria and Albert Museum.

Richard Entrup, global chief information officer of Christie’s, said: “The summit will offer a forum to invite some of the brightest technology thought leaders to discuss their views on emerging trends and predictions facing the future of our business.”

Tickets for the event to be held at Christie's King Street offices in London on July 17 are on sale starting at £350.
