The phenomenon started in the US and was named for the day that retailers bank balances start to move from red to black as people begin to spend.

A number of the art and antiques trade are getting involved with Black Friday events and here is a selection spotted by ATG.

In London’s Cecil Court silver dealer Daniel Bexfield Fine Antique Silver & Objects of Vertu is offering a three-day deal. He said: “It is that time of year again to repeat the genuine discount of the Black Friday weekend. Wishing you all very well and happy shopping.”

He is offering a 25% discount on all items priced up to £10,000 and a 15% discount on items over £10,000.

Two-day deal

Down in Dorset, Bridport Antiques at The Old Court in West Street in Bridport is offering a two-day deal. The antiques centre will stay open later until 8pm today (November 23), and will continue the discounting into Saturday, November, 24, when it will be open from 10am-5pm.

Reductions on offer at the centre include a pair of Chinese Elm Console Tables, c.1825, which will be reduced from £1975 to £1250, and two signed Salvador Dali numbered and embossed lithograph framed prints reduced by a third from £1500 to £1000.

The centre said it will honour a 15% discount in the showroom and at LoveAntiques.com at its online store over the period.
