Christie’s said Sands had been responsible for the “strategic direction” for all its marketing. Until a successor is appointed the day-to-day marketing activities will now be overseen by senior vice president, deputy CMO, Amy Wexler. Wexler will report directly to deputy chief executive Stephen Brooks.

Brooks said: “I would like to thank Marc for the impact he has had during his tenure. The marketing group has evolved significantly over this period. Marc has championed a digital transformation of our marketing function... The campaigns for Leonardo’s Salvatore Mundi and the Rockefeller collection, which harnessed this considerable creative and digital capability, have been widely recognised as ground-breaking.”

He said that Sands leaves the firm with an “industry-leading team in place”.

Sands said: “After four hugely enjoyable years at Christie’s, completing a restructure and transformation of all the marketing and digital activities, it is time for me to seek a new challenge, in a different environment.”
