An ancient Greek carved ivory horse’s head which sold for €170,000 (£150,440) on May 6 at the Hôtel des Ventes de Monte Carlo.
The head was created around the 4th century BC and measures 4 x 7in (10.5 x 18.5cm).
The carving proved to be the toast of the Hôtel des Ventes de Monte Carlo’s May 6 sale of Antiquities and Islamic works of art when it sold for €170,000 (£150,440).
The head, which came from a Monegasque collection, attracted the attention of several bidders in the room and on the phone and surpassed its €80,000-120,000 estimate to sell to an English buyer.
The firm’s antiquities expert, Bianca Massard, thinks that the size of the carving means it probably formed part of either an equestrian statue or possibly a larger group in bronze and ivory.
