Offered on April 7, the 19 original drawings have come to auction from a vendor whose grandfather lived near Manchester.
They have been authenticated by Lowry specialists George and Ivan Aird of Grove Fine Art, who were the artist’s agents, and Martin Summers, the former managing director of The Lefevre Gallery, the dealership that held Lowry’s first one-man show in London and continued to represented the artist until his death.
All the works date from 1911-19 apart from one which is from the 1920s. Depicting academic subjects, such as refined classical nudes and studies of bust heads, they contrast with his later and more commercial ‘matchstick men’ paintings of northern industrial landscapes.
The estimates at Bentleys range from £2000-20,000.
