Auction house William George has had a run of stand-out Rolex watches up for offer this autumn. One highlight is this 1954 Rolex 6538 Submariner Red Depth stainless steel watch with a black dial which is on sale in a timed auction running until November 21. The catalogue description reports that “starting with Dr No, Sean Connery wore a 6538 in several James Bond films. This catapulted the watch to stardom… It has a dizzying number of dial variations for such a short production run of only four years (1955-59)… The 6538 is the most sought-after Submariners in collecting history.” It is estimated at £200,000-250,000.

Moving to France, Christie’s in Paris is to offer dresses, suits and accessories belonging to French actress Catherine Deneuve. She is auctioning her collection of haute couture outfits, many of them one-off pieces made by Yves Saint Laurent, as she is downsizing and no longer has room for the collection. The actress was the designer’s muse for many years and first met him when she was married to the British photographer David Bailey. The collection includes coats, suits, dresses and accessories and the lots will be exhibited between January 19-24 at Christie’s saleroom in Paris. Around 150 lots will be offered on January 24 in the auction house along an online sale on January 23-29, 2019.
