The work, called Zeal, was part of the pair’s Scapegoating Pictures exhibition at White Cube gallery in London in 2014 and will be offered at auction at Roseberys' Modern & Contemporary British Art sale on January 24.
Gilbert Proesch and George Passmore have worked together since the late 1960s and their work is based around their home in London’s East End. They are known for their highly formal appearance in suits and their work focuses on brightly coloured graphic-style photo-based artworks with performance art.
Zeal carries an estimate of £60,000-100,000. The title of the work is taken from an anti-Islamophobia flyer found on Brick Lane and represents the view of “modern humanity that is at once libertarian and free-thinking, opposed to bigotry of all forms and dedicated to secular realism”.
Roseberys' Modern & Contemporary British Art sale is being held at its saleroom in West Norwood, south London, having previously been online-only.
The sale of Zeal coincides with a new exhibition by the pair at Bermondsey’s White Cube called The Beard Pictures and their Fuckosophy which runs until January 28. Roseberys said that White Cube confirmed the authenticity of the Zeal artwork.
