Last week, we looked at some of the dogs still available for buyers, but this one found a new home in a sale at the Lincolnshire auctioneers during its Pictures and Paintings sale on February 3.

The 19th century oil on canvas study, 12in (30cm) square, was by British artist A Forbes, signed and dated 1838. It was offered framed and was hammered down for £440 over a high estimate of £300. It had previously been owned by a vendor in her 90s and was sold over the phone to a member of the UK trade.

The dog is a Cairn terrier. It is a small breed of working terrier developed on the Isle of Skye in the 17th century which were used to keep down vermin – a threat to game. The one in question is shown wearing a collar inscribed J Guthrie Esq of Grange.
