Cheffins appoints head of Asian art

Philippe Smolarski is the new head of Asian art at Cheffins’ auction house in Cambridge.

Smolarski has worked in the Oriental art market for 25 years. He was previously the director at the Foundation Richard Liu, the European Institute of Chinese Studies in Paris. Cheffins will hold its next Asian Art auction on November 8.

Gore Grimes joins Adam’s

Adam’s of Dublin has appointed Nicholas Gore Grimes as an associate director. Gore Grimes began his career in the art industry at Adam’s in 1995 before a stint in New York.

He then set up the Cross Gallery on Dublin’s Francis Street in 1999 where he worked with contemporary artists including John Boyd, Michael Coleman, Simon English, Felim Egan and Cristina Bunello.

Gore Grimes will specialise in Irish art and 20th century design as well as working on maintaining client relationships and developing new business. Adam’s says he will work alongside directors James O’Halloran, Stuart Cole and consultant David Britton.

Bonhams has promoted Harvey Cammell to the newly created position of global director of valuations, trusts and estates, house sales and private collections.

Cammell, who is deputy chairman, Bonhams UK, and currently heads the team in Europe, will be responsible for “the development of its valuations, private client and single-owner, sales business across the Bonhams international group”, says the auction house.
