Quaritch is leaving South Audley Street for a five-floor, late 17th century townhouse at 36 Bedford Row.
The new location will accommodate a reference library that had been housed offsite previously.
Quaritch’s Alexander Day said: “A lot of dealers have moved from Mayfair and we didn’t have a shop front so we didn’t have that benefit there. The new location means we are close to institutions such as the British Museum and the Wellcome Collection. It is a great location for us.”
It is the latest bookshop to leave Mayfair: Maggs moved from 50 Berkeley Square in Mayfair to Bedford Square in Bloomsbury in 2017, a 15-minute walk from Bedford Row.
Quaritch, owned and run by book collector and investor John Koh, was founded in 1847 by German-born Bernard Quaritch. Based in Mayfair, it moved to Soho in the 1960s until a decade ago when it relocated back to Mayfair to 40 South Audley Street. It will leave this address for its new home on May 7.
