“We were determined to do everything we could to bring back this extraordinary ‘little book’ to the Brontë Parsonage Museum and now can’t quite believe that it will in fact be coming home to where it was written 189 years ago.”

Kitty Wright, executive director of The Brontë Society, which secured an 1830 autograph miniature manuscript by a 14-year-old Charlotte Brontë. It was auctioned at Aguttes in Paris.

“We want to reach the smaller collector and dealer, and staff at dealerships and auction houses who may want to make a small contribution.”

Alastair Gibson, a director of FACT (the Friends of Antique and Cultural Treasures Limited) which is seeking donations for an appeal against the ivory ban.

“As with many items it isn’t of any great monetary value but it is most certainly of sentimental value to the club and is part of our 100-year history.”

Malcolm Knight, president of the Dittons Skiff and Punting Club in an appeal after the memorial clock on its Thames Ditton boathouse was stolen.

“We’re very proud of Great Uncle Jack’s achievements. We decided to sell because we want the memorabilia to be enjoyed. It’s just been stuck in a cupboard where no one can see it.”

Christine Downham who sold at Hansons a collection of medals won by Jack London at the 1928 Olympic Games. They represent the first Olympic medals won by a black athlete.

“It’s great that the association is attracting new blood, when many craft skills are under pressure.”  

Jim Broughton, outgoing chair of the British Antique Furniture Restorers’ Association, which recently welcomed two new members.
