Spink
Spink are an auction house specialising in stamps, coins, medals and banknotes. The firm was founded in London in 1666 as a goldsmiths and pawnbrokers but, as well their premises in Bloomsbury, London, they now also hold sales in Switzerland, New York, Hong Kong and Singapore.
As part of their international expansion, Spink acquired companies including Robson Lowe, Shreves Philatelic Galleries and Smythe in the US as well as Phila China and Oeno China auctions in Hong Kong.
£44,000 for the torc that was treasure but not trove
04 October 2010A RARE East Anglian Iron Age gold torc dating from c.150-50BC, thought to have been discovered in the Diss area of Norfolk around 1942, sold for £44,000 (plus premium) in Spink's latest sale of coins and medals.
British Army’s first VC sells for £210,000
04 May 2010THE first Victoria Cross awarded to a soldier in the British Army sold for £210,000 (plus 20 per cent buyer's premium) at Spink in London on April 22. The Conservative Party donor and VC collector Lord Ashcroft was beaten to the prize by an anonymous buyer.
Ashcroft captures ‘ultimate VC and bar’
30 November 2009THE Conservative peer Lord Ashcroft has reportedly paid nearly £1.5m for the only double Victoria Cross awarded during the First World War.
‘Diseased’ Australian banknotes make £350,000
12 October 2009FROM May 1913, the first distinctive Commonwealth of Australia banknotes were issued. They were controversial in that no portrait of the reigning monarch, George V, was included in the design.
The £1m note makes £68,000
20 October 2008A Bank of England £1m Treasury note sold at Spink on October 1 for £68,000.
For sale: the million-pound note
15 September 2008Spink are to offer a £1m Treasury Note. Dated London 30 August 1948, and printed with the red serial number 000008, it is one of only two surviving examples from the nine thought to have been printed in connection with the Marshall Plan.
Found in a UK country auction – the £180,000 note
14 July 2008This $1000 Straits Settlement bill was described by Spink specialist Barnaby Faull as “the holy grail of Asian Pacific banknotes” after it had sold for Sin$420,000 (£180,000) plus buyer’s premium in Singapore on July 5.
Spink acquire New York’s Smythe
17 March 2008SPINK have taken another step in their bid to become global brand leaders in their field with another major acquisition in the United States. Last week they announced the purchase of New York’s oldest established coins dealers and auctioneers, R.M. Smythe & Company.
Lord Ashcroft Trust to show VC collection at Spink
10 March 2008Spink are to put the unrivalled Victoria Cross collection of Lord Ashcroft on display in an 11-day exhibition in their main gallery in April. The exhibition is a forerunner to what is expected to become a permanent public display in two years’ time.
Stamps boost Spink’s status

10 December 2007SPINK have acquired the assets of Collectors Gallery and have appointed the managing partner of the dealership Mike Veissid as director for their new bond and share department.

08 October 2007SPINK have set a new record for an English silver coin with the £180,000 they took for a 1663 Charles II silver Crown on September 27.

Spink unveil new state-of-the-art showroom
11 December 2006On November 28 Spink officially opened the new showroom at their existing headquarters at 69 Southampton Row.
Spink now have a musical string to their bow
12 October 2006Spink have added musical instruments to their portfolio by taking an equity stake in Brompton’s Auctioneers. They will operate from Spink’s newly expanded premises at 29 Southampton Row in London WC1, starting with a sale on November 6.
Spink set new English coin record with £400,000 for Double Leopard
04 July 2006There was nothing dull or predictable about the coin sale at Spink on June 29 when an expectant crowd gathered to witness the sale of one of the rarest of English Medieval coins: the gold Double Leopard florin of Edward III which was minted for only a few months in 1344.

03 May 2006All Bank of England banknotes issued prior to the early 1800s are rare but the note, pictured here, dated 30 August 1705, is believed to be the oldest in private hands.

27 March 2006Following its recent discovery by a metal detectorist in the south of England, one of Britain’s rarest medieval coins is to be sold by London numismatists Spink.
Spink cap £19.7m year with new acquisition
23 January 2006Leading numismatic auctioneers and dealers Spink have announced the acquisition of B.J. Dawson Coins. Brian Dawson, who opened his first shop in Bolton, Lancashire and has over 40 years’ experience in the coin trade, will join the firm as director of the coin dealing business for Spink.
