Alcalà question export policy as sale tops season
24 July 2003SPAIN: The spring and early summer auctions in Madrid were notable for one outstanding sale held at Alcalá Subastas, which generated not only a very large total but also some controversy. Alcalá Subastas (15% buyer’s premium) counts on the considerable expertise of Richard de Willermin as their paintings expert.
Subastas Segre sale
24 July 2003Subastas Segre (16% buyer’s premium) held their monthly sale from May 20 to 22. In the picture catalogue, top price was the double-estimate €30,000 (£22,060) for a complete set of Goya’s Caprichos, catalogued as First Edition but not in ideal condition. A 3ft 3in (1m) square abstract oil on canvas of 1982 by Fernando Zobel (1942-1984), whose work is highly regarded in Spain, made €23,700 (£17,425).
Braveheart Scots gain freedom for a month

Bonhams’ dark horse comes in at £1.75m
24 July 2003In terms of ‘Old Masters’ in their strictest sense, the July 9 sale sale at Bonhams (19.5/10% buyer’s premium) Knightsbridge might have been conspicuously short of quality, but the presence of this fine George Stubbs (1724-1806) canvas of a dark bay in a landscape. right, gave proceedings a lift when it sold at £1.75m to an American collector represented by London dealer Ray Waterhouse in the room.

Boxcar silly! Export package drives up prices
24 July 2003THERE is no getting away from the appeal of railways which were a major feature in one of two Midlands toy sales in June. The June 18 sale in Rugby held by toys specialists Vectis (15% buyer’s premium) set two modest records among a collection of Hornby items starting with a mint and boxed group of four 00 gauge petrol tankers.
Silver dealer pleads guilty in tax evasion case
21 July 2003S.J. Shrubsole, the well-known silver dealership of New York, have pleaded guilty to failing to collect around $75,000 in city and state sales taxes on over $900,000 worth of goods. The gallery also pleaded guilty to falsifying tax returns filed with the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance. They have now paid $150,000 in fines relating to the plea.
Hindman returns with Chicago auction house
21 July 2003With a five-year non-compete clause behind her, Leslie Hindman has returned to the auction world with a new 12,000-square-foot auction room in Chicago’s West Loop.
Masonic images lead to record claim

Overseas Asian Sales
15 July 2003The Asian auction held by Nagel (33% buyer’s premium) in Stuttgart on May 20 and May 21 saw a larger influx of mainland Chinese dealers than for their last major Asian sale in November despite the fact that until two days before the auction the German government had placed a moratorium on visa applications in response to the SARS outbreak.
Morrill in blue and white
15 July 2003On September 16, Doyle New York will sell the F. Gordon Morrill collection of Chinese and Chinese Export porcelain. Considered to be one of the last great collections of early blue and white Chinese porcelain still in private hands – the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston has described the Morrill collection as “equal in quality to the superb collection at the Ardebil Shrine in Tehran, Persia” – the archive was assembled during the 1960s and 70s, when many notable collections came onto the market.
Pompey’s new circumstance
15 July 2003One of the big classical numismatics events of the year is the spring sale at Leu (15% buyer’s premium) in Zurich. This year’s, on May 5-6, was a bumper crop – with 1156 lots it is the largest sale that Leu have held since their foundation in 1956.
The East fulfils its promise in the West
15 July 2003The resurgence of interest from Asian buyers in quality transitional blue and white sleeve vases was seen at Sotheby’s (22% buyer’s premium) in Amsterdam, when this finely painted example, right, illustrating boys presenting gifts to a number of scholars, topped the 243-lot Asian sale on May 21.
