Letters to the Editor
ATG letter: Why should dealers have to justify their retail pricing?
17 September 2018MADAM – In your round table report on charging for expertise (ATG No 2358), you identified topics raised in the discussion and asked us to give our views them. So here goes:
ATG letter: If the trade cares about elephants, it must support this ban
17 September 2018MADAM – As representatives of Two Million Tusks, we are writing to express our profound disappointment at ATG’s promotion of Alastair Gibson’s pro-ivory trade petition [Editor writes: petition is to increase the proposed de minimis exemption for antique ivory from 10% to 50%].
ATG letter: We should support ivory petition, not dismiss it
10 September 2018MADAM – I read the letter from Gavin Littaur (ATG No 2355, August 25) and the letter of the previous edition from Nick Silver (ATG no 2354, August 18) with more than a little puzzlement.
Trade takes cricket revenge in annual match 2018
10 September 2018Jamie Rountree of Rountree Tryon Galleries writes to let us know the result of the annual cricket match between the Art Trade and Christie’s Auctioneers.
ATG letter: Attributions are always a matter of opinion
10 September 2018MADAM – Those still reeling in shocked disbelief over the painting Glass with two pears by William Nicholson being judged as not being by his hand [as part of a BBC Fake or Fortune? programme], might take heart from an article on page 9 in ATG No 2355.
ATG letter: Chippendale ivory removal is ‘unforgivable’ – furniture dealer Martin Levy
03 September 2018MADAM – Your news story (‘Ivory removed from Chippendale before sale’, ATG No 2356) draws attention to the deliberate and unforgivable removal of original ivory elements from an important commode by Thomas Chippendale, England’s most famous cabinet maker.
ATG’s Chippendale news story: media reaction
03 September 2018Our story last week revealed that ivory elements of an important piece of Chippendale furniture, the Rowland Winn commode made c.1766, were removed for its appearance at a Christie’s auction earlier this year, the commode having been imported from the US.
ATG letter: Petition - House of Lords may see sense
27 August 2018MADAM – ATG letter correspondents Peter Cameron and Gavin Littaur (ATG Nos 2353, 2355) have hit the nail on the head in many ways.
Items with ivory already threatened
27 August 2018MADAM – In his letter (ATG No 2355) Michael Baggott references the possibility that, following changes in the law, antiques could be mutilated because of their ivory content.
ATG letter: We must record the ivory items at risk
20 August 2018MADAM – A friend in the trade asked me over a year ago, ‘what will you do if antiques containing ivory are made illegal?’. Since then I’ve given it serious thought. What can any of us do?
ATG letter: Ivory solution is simple one
20 August 2018MADAM – Peter Cameron writes in ATG No 2353 that only 691 people have signed the ivory petition [now at 1688 as we go to press], that a response from the government requires 10,000 signatures, and that 100,000 are needed to raise a parliamentary debate.
ATG letter: Rode Hall has complete Crane set
20 August 2018MADAM – I write regarding your Pick of the Week article (ATG No 2354,) on the Walter Crane vase (1890) for Maw & Co, sold at the Kingham & Orme auction in July.
ATG letter: Jeremy Thorpe – risky strategy but right
13 August 2018MADAM – For the record, Mr Jeremy Thorpe (Previews, ATG No 2353) did not refuse to give evidence – he was advised by his lawyers not to and reluctantly took their advice.
ATG letter: On ivory we need a little high-level diplomacy
13 August 2018MADAM – Six hundred and ninety-one people is actually a fairly decent response from a trade in which there are only a handful of interested parties (Letters, ATG No 2353).
ATG letter: CITES on the ground
13 August 2018MADAM – I thought your readers might be interested in having a greater understanding of the importance that CITES plays in protecting wildlife and fauna.
ATG letter: Got an early Grayson Perry?
06 August 2018MADAM – Have ATG readers got a Grayson Perry pot or plate from the 1980s lurking in their living rooms? If they have, then the Holburne Museum in Bath wants to hear from them.
ATG letter: Outsize tongs, egg lifters and expert ding-dongs
06 August 2018MADAM – I was interested to see the picture of ‘outsize tongs’ considered to vegetable tongs or salad servers from a recent Adam’s sale in Dublin (ATG No 2352, page 21).
ATG letter: Ivory – call for more petitioners
06 August 2018MADAM – My congratulations to Anthony Bernbaum and to Lewis Baer for their excellent letters: Mr Bernbaum’s account of why he left Online Galleries and Mr Baer advocating the creation of a global trade body for the art and antiques sector (ATG No 2352).
ATG letter: Why I waved bye-bye to Online Galleries
23 July 2018MADAM – I wanted to add to the discussion (ATG No 2344) on the recent fee increase by Online Galleries (Anthony Bernbaum of The Peartree Collection writes).
ATG letter: United Nations of dealers
23 July 2018MADAM – I write in reference to the letter from BADA chairman Michael Cohen, and the reply by LAPADA chief executive Freya Simms (ATG No 2351), on cooperation between the two organisations (Lewis J Baer of Newel, New York writes).
