Top ‘Gold’ lot was an unrestored copy of the first Superman comic* of 1939, a CGC 4.5 rated copy that sold for $300,000 (£243,110). Around a million copies were printed but very few are known to have survived in this grade or better.
And in grading terms, comics don’t come much better than the 9.6 rated copy of The Amazing Spider- Man No 1 offered in the Dallas sale. A ‘Silver Age’ star of 1963 from the famed Curator Pedigree Collection, it sold for $220,000 (£178,280).
Steve Ditko’s original black and white splash-page artwork for The Amazing Spider-Man No 27, headlined ‘Bring Back my Goblin to Me’ and featuring both Spidey and the villainous Green Goblin, sold at $200,000 (£162,75).
Another exceptionally popular ‘Golden Age’ lot was Batman No 1 of 1940, a 5.5 rated copy that was also secured at $200,000.
* Superman had made his first appearance in Action Comics No 1 of 1938. In August of this year Heritage sold a 5.5 rated copy of that comic for $800,000, but in 2014 a CGC 9.0 rated copy sold for $3.2m (then £1.9m) on eBay.
