Gavin Gardiner’s first sale of 2017 will include nine sporting and big game rifles from the collection of artist, author and naturalist H Frank Wallace (1881-1962).

A widely admired and successful sporting artist, he was also remembered as an authority on all aspects of hunting, from the stalking of British native deer to the shooting of the more exotic big-game species found in many different parts of the world.

Pictured here is a 450/.400 double-barrel boxlock ejector rifle by Charles Osbourne, which is expected to fetch £4000-6000. The collection also includes several examples by John Rigby & Co such as a .275 HV bolt action sporting rifle, built in 1903, and the first Rigby .275 regulated for the high velocity ammunition.

The auction will take place at Sotheby’s London on April 12.

Depicting the mortally wounded Corso Donati being transported by the monks of San Salvi to their abbey, the picture is signed and dated 1867.

Owned by three generations of a Bristol family, it comes to Charterhouse in a Florentine carved giltwood frame, and is estimated at £20,000-30,000.
