Morgan, who earlier this year discovered a £13m pair of Qianlong ‘butterfly’ vases, was among the casualties of the redundancy programme that accompanied the closure of Christie’s South Kensington.

He will join the Salisbury saleroom’s highly respected Asian art department as senior specialist working alongside John Axford, who is both department head and deputy chairman of the firm.

Axford described the appointment as “an exciting step forward” and said he was “confident that together we will continue to grow a dynamic department”.

Chairman Paul Viney described Axford and Morgan as “a potentially formidable combination” supported by other department members Alexandra Doméracki, Freya Yuan and Marta Olszewska.

“Over the last decade John has done a remarkable job in building up our Asian art department to a point where we are now competing globally at the highest level,” said Viney.

Morgan, who is based in Kent, will assume a roving role focused upon meeting clients old and new.

Woolley & Wallis has also appointed Lyndsey Harvey as a new head of marketing.

Her most recent role was as communications manager for the Salisbury International Arts Festival. Tamzin Corbett, the firm’s marketing department manager, will continue to work on a part-time basis alongside Harvey.
