On September 6 Catherine Southon is offering a 2½in (6.5cm) wide diamond RAF brooch from the 1930s at her auction being held near Selsdon, Surrey. It is estimated at £600-800.
They started to appear in the UK in the Boer and First World Wars, but the most familiar types are those showing the classic RAF wings cap badge.
On September 6 Catherine Southon is offering a 2½in (6.5cm) wide diamond RAF brooch from the 1930s at her auction being held near Selsdon, Surrey.
This brooch is catalogued as ‘possibly Cartier’ and the saleroom notes: “While the brooch is undoubtedly of fine quality and very similar in design to the RAF brooches produced by Cartier in the 1930s, it has undergone a substantial historical repair and possibly any marks have been lost.” The estimate is £600-800.
Examples by Cartier RAF brooches are particularly sought-after – in June 2013 Dorset auction house Duke’s sold one for £2900.
