It was made c.1820 for Henri Charles Ferdinand, Marie Dieudonné d’Artois, Duc de Bordeaux and Comte de Chambord (1820-83). Henri was a member of the Bourbon dynasty and a pretender to the French throne.
After the abdication of his grandfather Charles X, and Charles’ eldest son Louis Antoine, he was never officially recognised or proclaimed king by the National Assembly and was succeeded by Louis Philippe in 1830. The cradle passed down through the Comte de Chambord and the Ducs de Rohan in various French chateaux until it was sold in 1953 at Parke Bernet Galleries as part of the collections of the Comte de Rohan-Chabot. It has remained in the same family since. The estimate is $7000-10,000.
