The resulting body of work was named the Paper Pools series and was created during six weeks of feverish activity in 1978 at Tyler Graphics, the New York studios near Mount Kisco run by the master printer Kenneth Tyler.

Reminiscent of Hockney’s famed ‘60s acrylic paintings featuring Los Angeles swimming pools, this later group includes 29 separate images, some in multiple versions.

Two single-sheet examples from the Paper Pools series have been consigned from an “important American collection” to lead Phillips’ Evening & Day Editions auction in London on January 19. Steps with Shadow F (Paper Pool 2), a 4ft 2in x 2ft 9in (1.28m x 85cm) work pictured here, depicts the circular steps descending from the corner of Tyler’s pool and is guided at £400,000-600,000.
