A set of marine hand-coloured aquatints and watercolours dating to the height of Britain’s naval dominance has been consigned to David Lay’s sale in Penzance on January 26.
Painted in the 1790s by the maritime artist Samuel Owen (1768-1857), they show specific naval engagements from the French Revolutionary Wars. Each ‘plate’ is annotated by the artist’s hand naming the vessel and its captain and signing each most obedient & very humble servant Sam Owen.
Few examples in this form have ever been published, leading the auction house to believe the collection is likely to have been an unrealised project between the artist and an engraver.
Offered as six lots, the 25 works have been consigned from a vendor in the Rock area of Cornwall. This aquatint of burning ships at Toulon is from a set of eight plates, each measuring 5 x 8in (13 x 21cm), and guided at £200-300.
A trio of drawings by the accomplished ornithological artist John Cyril Harrison (1898-1985) is going under the hammer at Keys of Aylsham in Norwich on February 8-10.
Displayed in a single frame, each 4½ x 5½in pencil drawing depicts a bird of prey.
Estimate £100-150.
A pair of 1930s-‘40s glazed haberdashery display counters is included in Richard Winterton’s furniture sale on January 25-26 in Fradley Park, Staffordshire.
Each one has 16 interior waterfall drawers. The 5ft 11in x 3ft (1.81m x 91cm) counters will be offered separately, estimated at £70-90 and £80-120.
