DTI block abolition of market overt
LORD Renton’s bill to abolish market overt was given a second reading in the House of Lords last week, but the chances of its becoming law were impaired because the Department of Trade and Industry refused to support it.
The newly appointed minister, Lord Strathclyde, said that a consultation paper on the whole question of transfer of title would be published by the Government shortly and that he would prefer to await the results of that review.

Market overt, a medieval law that provided good title to buyers of stolen goods purchased in good faith under certain circumstances in specific public markets was, nonetheless, finally abolished in 1994.

Edinburgh auctioneers open office in London
BOUYED up by an increasing number of consignments from England, Edinburgh-based auctioneers Lyon & Turnbull are opening an office in central London.
Lyon & Turnbull, who last week announced January to December sales figures of £6.2m, told ATG they completed more than 100 jobs South of the Border in 2005 (many of them in the South East) – a sufficient springboard for premises in SW1. The new office, scheduled to be up and running by the end of February, is situated on the third floor of a neoclassical block at number 11, Pall Mall. The Cyprus Turkish Airlines have the street-level offices.

The Pall Mall area is increasingly becoming a London hub, with a bigger concentration of premises for dealers and auctioneers.
