A run of Wisden Cricketers’ Almanack books, dating from the late 19th century onwards, is estimated at £8000-10,000 overall in Charterhouse’s July 28 sale in Sherborne, Dorset.
Generally known as ‘The Bible of Cricket’, Wisden first came out in 1864, establishing itself soon after as the most famous annual sports reference book.
The run of Wisdens at Charterhouse starts from 1890 to 2010. The 120 copies will be offered in 30 lots. Among the most sought-after are two volumes from 1918 and 1919, which were printed after the First World War due to paper shortages (they are valued at £2000 each).
This pencil and chalk study of two female nudes by Augustus John (1878-1961) is estimated at £5000-10,000 in WH Lane & Son’s July 20 auction in Cornwall.
Signed and dated 1899, the 11 x 7in (28 x 18cm) study has been in the collection of the Cornish-based explorer Robin Hanbury-Tenison.

John Nicholson’s July 27 sale in Haslemere, Surrey, features this 19th century mahogany and parquetry baby house attributed to Ralph Turnbull.
Turnbull, a Scottish emigré cabinet-maker, formed a partnership with his brothers Thomas and Cuthbert, establishing a business in Jamaica in 1819. There his firm produced furniture featuring exotic native parquetry veneers until at least the 1870s.
This 4ft 4in x 2ft 10in (1.32m x 86cm) wide example dates to c.1875-80, and is guided at £10,000-15,000.
