A silver mounted horse hoof inkwell, inscribed with a reference to the Battle of Waterloo, features in Dawsons Auctioneers’ sale in Maidenhead on July 22.

The hinged lid displays an armorial shield with two rampant lions and opens to reveal an inscription that reads The last Waterloo horse, belonging to the 2nd Life Guards. Buried in Hyde Park, 1836.

During the battle, the 2nd Life Guards regiment formed the celebrated charging line of Lord Somerset’s Household Brigade against the French cuirassiers, which saved the British centre from being overrun.

The hoof itself is incised H 18, and the silver mounts are hallmarked for London 1845 and Charles Rawlings & William Summers.

Estimate £1000-1500.
