As part of a portfolio of roles he intends to take on in the wake of CSK’s closure, the Christie’s veteran will consult for Roseberys as well as running an art and antiques advisory service.

“With 33 years’ experience under my belt, I will be buying and selling works of art as well as offering an advisory service for clients, hand-holding them through the auction consignment experience,” he told ATG.

Though he is leaving after 33 years at the firm, having joined as a porter in 1984, McElhatton will continue to work for Christie’s on special projects.

A freelance artist before he joined the auction house, McElhatton also intends “spending a bit more time in the studio at the bottom of my garden painting, which is my first love and passion”.
