One of the sale’s earliest pieces will be the19in (48cm) high carved limestone portrait bust of c.1300 pictured above, which is thought to represent one of the sons of Saint Louis: either Philippe le Hardi or his brother Louis.

The bust has a distinguished provenance, hailing from Yvelines in the Ile de France; firstly at the collegiate church of Notre Dame de Poissy, then at a house in the town. It subsequently passed into the collection of the Nabis painter Maurice Denis at the priory at Saint Germaine en Laye, where it was recorded in 1934 before entering a Swiss collection.

The carving has an estimate of SFr100,000-150,000.
