Galleria Borghese loan to TEFAF

Works from the Galleria Borghese in Rome will feature in a loan exhibition at this year’s TEFAF Maastricht. The show comprises 13 paintings and sculptures and is the largest loan the Galleria has made outside Italy.

This sculpture of a gypsy girl by Nicolas Cordier commissioned by the founder of the collection Scipione Borghese (1577-1633), will be among the works featured.

Art Business in NY

A SECOND edition of the Art Business Conference launches in New York in April.

Up to 260 delegates are expected at the new event, part of a wider expansion plan by conference organiser Art Market Minds. The Big Apple conference will be held at 10 on the Park. The annual conference in London is in September.

Gurlitt restitutions

TWO more works from the infamous collection of Cornelius Gurlitt have been restituted to their legal heirs.

A drawing by Adolph von Menzel has been returned to the heir of Elsa Helen Cohen, who sold the piece to finance her escape to the US in 1938, while a painting, View of the Seine from the Pont-Neuf, by Camille Pissarro has been restored to the heir of French- Jewish businessman Max Heilbronn.

A total of six works from the Gurlitt hoard have now been restituted.

Conference focuses on cybercrime

DEALERS at the ninth annual

LAPADA Conference last week were reminded of the rising threat posed by cybercrime to small businesses.

Dan Sloshberg, cyber resiliency expert at Mimecast, told members of the association that small firms were as likely to face breaches by hackers as larger corporations.

Common strategies used by hackers including phishing, the use of ransomware and impersonation attacks. He added that 91% of attacks start with email.

Sloshberg said: “Just stop and think before you click.”

Louvre unveils Kaplan Old Masters

WORKS from the collection of American billionaire Thomas S Kaplan have gone on view at the Louvre as part of the Paris museum’s exhibition series celebrating the Dutch Golden Age.

The group of Old Masters include 13 works by Rembrandt and a Vermeer. Reportedly acquired over 14-year period, Kaplan’s works are billed as the ‘The Leiden Collection’, named after Rembrandt’s birthplace, and features over 250 Dutch pictures.

Next year selected works will travel to the Long Museum in Shanghai and the Louvre Abu Dhabi.

Due diligence and advisory network

A NEW network of legal advisors and art service providers has been formed to provide expertise on issues such as title claim, provenance research, dispute resolution, insurance and security.

The Art Due Diligence Group (ADDG) said that those seeking help can use “any of the services on an individual basis or subscribe to the full comprehensive service to aid with complex transactions”.

Among the firms and advisors who have joined ADDG are Virtus Risk Management, Art Recovery International, Taylor Hampton Solicitors and Vitruvian Arts Consultancy.

Relaunch for London art event

THE annual three-day summer initiative showcasing West End art galleries and auction houses formerly known as Brown’s London Art Weekend has announced a major rebranding and partnership. It will be known as Mayfair Art Weekend and, alongside the relaunch, comes a collaboration with the Royal Academy of Arts which will act as the hub for the event.

Over 60 Contemporary and Modern art galleries and specialists in other disciplines across Mayfair and St James’s take part in the weekend, which runs this year from June 30-July 2.

The Royal Academy is staging a free arts festival offering creative workshops, music, dance and performances alongside its long-standing Summer Exhibition and Schools Show.
