The show includes a total of 48 pieces, among them this portrait of a rather hefty ‘calf’ by John Vine (1809-67). The artist is a significant figure in the history of British folk art and in his day received frequent commissions despite having been born with only rudimentary arms and legs.

This pen, ink and watercolour work is inscribed to the verso: A Portrait of a Calf about 15 Months old, supposed to weigh 50 stones and upwards, the property of Mr Martin Harsant, Earl Soham. It is available for £4200.

The show opens with a preview day and from then on is open by appointment on weekdays. Though the exhibition takes place slightly before the rush of events in the summer, Young will exhibit in the seventh edition of Masterpiece London, which takes place at the height of the season (June 29-July 5). The gallery has taken part in the event since its inception.

After that, the gallery will take up its usual place at the Winter Antiques Show in New York in January 2018.
