Once part of a large Crucifixion altarpiece, these German figures of the Virgin and St John are typical of the large figural altarpieces produced in numbers in Franconian workshops during the 16th century.
They are estimated together at £3000-5000 in Chiswick Auctions’ May 24 sale in London.
Each limewood figure measures around 2ft 3in (70cm) high and retains traces of the original polychrome and gilding.
Around 700 objects spanning over 400 years from the London townhouse of Irish entrepreneur and politician Lord Ballyedmond have been consigned to Sotheby’s on May 23-24.
Also known as Dr Edward Haughey, Ballyedmond rose from humble beginnings in Kilcurry, County Louth, to make his fortune founding the Norbrook Group, a pharmaceutical company based in Newry, Northern Ireland. He died in a helicopter accident in 2014.
The 326-lot sale, valued at around £3m, is being sold by his wife, and includes paintings, tapestries, porcelain, furniture and a good dose of Irish silver.
This 3in (8.5cm) wide silver freedom box, made by Dublin silver box maker Aeneas Ryan in 1805, is guided at £3000-5000. The hinged cover is engraved, on a shield in the manner of Thomas Bewick, with the Dublin city coat of arms, and bears an inscription to Irish lawyer and politician Sir James Chatterton (c.1750-1806).
This Warwick cruet made by Samuel Woods, London, 1755, is included in the silver and jewellery section of Chorley’s forthcoming sale on May 23-24.
The original Warwick cruet dates to 1715, when Anthony Nelme created a cruet containing three casters and two glass bottles for the Duke of Warwick.

More than 100 lots of books, letters, manuscripts and illustrations by one of Ireland’s finest artists, Jack B Yeats (1871-1957), are going under the hammer at Fonsie Mealy Auctioneers of Dublin on May 30. This scarce folio of 1902 editions of A Broad Sheet is estimated at €2000-3000.
The monthly publication, published in a few hundred by Elkin Mathews from January 1902 to December 1903, includes hand-coloured woodblock prints which are accompanied by poems and ballads by various authors.
Both Yeats brothers contributed to the edition pictured here, which includes an illustration of The Pooka by Yeats, and a poem called Spinning Song by WB Yeats.
