This large silver bowl by Tiffany was a wedding gift to the American-British socialite and heiress Mary Goelet and Henry John Innes-Ker, the 8th Duke of Roxburghe. Goelet was the daughter of the New York real-estate millionaire Ogden Goelet. When she married in 1903, her dowry was said to be $20m (around $500m in today’s money).
Estimated at £700-1000, it goes under the hammer at Charterhouse in Sherborne on May 18-19. The silver bowl measures 13in (33.5cm) wide and is engraved with a coronet above initials for the 8th Duke of Roxburghe to the centre and an inscription to the base.
The auction house said it was inherited from the vendor’s father several years ago and has been sitting on the sideboard of a 17th century Dorset cottage.
This 18ct gold and black enamel Georgian memorial ring for British army officer General Philip Honywood (1710-85) features in Reeman Dansie’s militaria sale in Colchester, Essex, on May 18.
Honywood was praised for his valour at the Battle of Dettingen in 1748 during the War of Austrian Succession, where he survived at least 23 broadsword wounds and two musket shots (which were never removed). He became a general in the Jacobite rising of 1745 and was seriously wounded again at the skirmish at Clifton Moor in 1745. The ring is inscribed Genl. Philip Honywood – Died 20th Feb. 1785 and is estimated at £600-800.
Charles Eames, Bertoia chairs and Arco Flos lighting are included in the mid-century modern collection of the late illustrator and photographer Ken Kirkwood.
A friend and contemporary to such architects as Norman Foster and Richard Rogers, Kirkwood worked as a photographer for graphic and interior design consultancies like Conran Design.
Kirkwood’s estate, which will also include his library of books and a collection of professional photography equipment, is going under the hammer at The Stamford Auction Rooms on May 27 in Lincolnshire.
This Charles and Ray Eames lounge chair and ottoman, made in walnut and black leather, is estimated at £1000-2000.
A First World War archive of Royal Flying Corps aerial photos and a log book has been consigned to Henry Aldridge & Son in Devizes on May 20.
The archive includes 18 aerial photos taken in 1917-18 including Ypres, bomb strikes at Langemarck, Belgium, and a trench system.
The log book belonged to pilot HW Sangway, and includes a RFC loose leaf notebook and Training Brigade transfer card, mapping Sangway’s career from a cadet at Brasenose College, Oxford, to France in January 1918.
