This painting by the marine artist John Cleveley the Elder (1712-77) leads Dreweatts’ dedicated sale of stock from London dealership Mallett.
The 2ft 11in x 3ft 10in (89cm x 1.17m) oil on canvas of two 32-gun frigates is guided at £30,000-50,000 in the Mallett: Taking Stock sale on November 8 in Donnington Priory.
The oil had descended through the family of JP Morgan and was sold as part of the property from the estate of JP Morgan Jr at Sotheby’s New York in 2006 for a premium-inclusive $96,000. It has since been purchased by Mallett from a European private collection.
