The horse and male rider was a recurrent theme in Elisabeth Frink’s (1930-93) art throughout her working life. Frink’s affection for horses stemmed from her country childhood in Suffolk, while her father had been a keen polo player and amateur jockey.

A 19 x 21in (48 x 54cm) lithograph of a horse and jockey, signed and numbered 30/30, dating from 1974, features in Roseberys’ sale of Modern & Contemporary Prints & Multiples in London on November 18, estimated at £400-600.

Soldiers, especially Dutch soldiers, were a popular subject for Delft tiles in the 17th century, inspired by the illustrations in Jacob de Gheyn’s important military manual The Exercise of Arms, which was first published in 1607.

Dreweatts’ sale in Donington Priory, Newbury, on November 22 will feature a pair of later 15 x 10in (38 x 25cm) Dutch Delft tile panels of Roman soldiers. Comprising six tiles each in shades of blue and manganese, the pair dates to the late 18th century or early 19th century. Estimate £600-800.
