The sale of contemporary and post-war British art – in Sudbury Town Hall on October 20, with the support of Colchester auction house Reeman Dansie – features 130 lots donated from the estates and studios of some of Britain’s best-known artists.

Works by artists including Maggi Hambling, Antony Gormley, Michael Ayrton, John Hoyland, Edward Bawden, Sarah Lucas and Julian Opie will be on offer, with online bidding on thesaleroom.com.

The sale is run by Gainsborough’s House, the museum and gallery housed in the birthplace and childhood home of the portraitist. The charitable trust which runs the museum is fundraising to transform the Grade-I listed Georgian building into a national centre and exhibition venue with four new galleries and performance spaces.

In 2016, the Heritage Lottery Fund awarded Gainsborough’s House £4.73m towards the project and since then the charity has been working to secure the remaining funds.
