It was compiled and edited by Herbert Beerbohm Tree, but in a copy sold for £6500 by Sotheby’s (25/20/12.5% buyer’s premium) on July 11, his half-brother, Max Beerbohm, has altered 47 of them to produce grotesque caricatures.

Shown above in both its original and altered states is one of his doctored portraits – in this instance based on a work by Frank Dicksee.

An original, unaltered copy of the Souvenir… was also part of the lot, which 13 years ago, at Christie’s South Kensington, had sold for £5500.
