SJ Phillips offer 260 lots at Sotheby’s
SJ Phillips is selling a selection of items at Sotheby’s after downsizing to new premises in Mayfair. The family-owned firm moved to Bruton Street earlier this year, ending a 144- year presence on Bond Street. Director Nicolas Norton, the great-grandson of the founder, said: “Owing to the smaller space, we are no longer able to display all of our collection successfully.”
The 260 lots will be offered on October 18 and include a Fabergé gold and red enamel timepiece by Henrik Wigström estimated at £120,000-180,000.
New MD for Bonhams Scotland
Bonhams has appointed Charles Graham-Campbell as managing director of its operations in Scotland.
He succeeds Miranda Leslie who is leaving after 10 years in the role “to pursue other projects”.

Graham-Campbell has been head of Bonhams’ valuations team north of the border for the past 13 years and is a member of the company’s UK board.
He joined the firm in 2004 after previously running the valuations department at Christie’s Scotland.
A native of the Highlands, he studied fine arts auctioneering and valuing at Southampton Solent university and is a qualified chartered surveyor.

Expansion for 1818 Auctioneers
1818 Auctioneers has made a number of appointments including apprentice administrator Katie Waine, saleroom assistant Andy Langdale and trainee valuer Garth Drinkall.
The firm on the Cumbria Lancashire border is also in the process of recruiting an additional saleroom assistant.
Manager Bill Nelson said the firm recently expanded into an adjoining building – the exhibition hall at the J36 Rural Auction Centre.
Caro sculptures settle £2.7m tax bill
Two abstract sculptures by Sir Anthony Caro have been acquired for the nation as part of the ‘Acceptance in Lieu’ scheme. Together they have settled £2.7m of inheritance tax due from the estate of Caro’s wife, the artist Sheila Girling, who died in 2015.
The sculptures have been temporarily allocated to the Tate, pending a decision on their permanent allocation.
Lock from 1962 and The Window (1966-67) are ranked among Caro’s most important works.
‘Stagecoach’ poster sells for £31,000
A rare poster for the 1939 film 'Stagecoach' that made £31,000 at Rogers Jones.
Rogers Jones’ auction of vintage film posters in Cardiff on September 15 was led by a rare variation for Stagecoach, the 1939 film which catapulted John Wayne to fame.
Depicting a total of nine leading cast members, it was contested by several bidders before being knocked down for £31,000 to a buyer in Texas via thesaleroom.com.
The same buyer also bought a poster for the 1940 Sherlock Holmes film at £13,000. The 70-lot cache of cinema posters was discovered by builders 32 years ago during the renovation of a house in Penarth.
Leslie Hindman opens in Atlanta
Chicago’s Leslie Hindman Auctioneers is to open in Atlanta, Georgia, the firm’s eighth saleroom location.
Mary Calhoun has been hired as director of business development for the location. Calhoun spent seven years at Sotheby’s New York in a number of business development and marketing roles. Calhoun will work with Michael Shapiro, former director of The High Museum of Art, who joined the firm in April as senior adviser.
Wright of Derby
Sotheby’s will offer a nocturne by Joseph Wright of Derby at its Old Master evening sale on December 6.
It comes to auction from Somerleyton Hall in Suffolk, having descended through the family of wealthy carpet manufacturer Sir Savile Crossley (1857-1935), 1st Baron Somerleyton.
'An Academy by Lamplight' by Joseph Wright of Derby which is estimated between £2.5m-3.5m at Sotheby’s Old Master evening sale on December 6.
An Academy by Lamplight from 1769 depicts six young draughtsmen contemplating a cast of a Hellenistic statue. The painting is one of two versions painted by Wright, the other acquired by Paul Mellon in 1964 and now in the Yale Centre for British Art, New Haven.
