Another version of the hugely popular black-and-white panelled ovoid vases which Ward began producing in the 1990s had made £18,000 (plus 20% premium) at London specialist Maak in May 2016.
However, the vendor being keen to sell, auctioneer Ben Rogers Jones pitched the entry into his March 24 sale at a £2000-4000 estimate.
“It was in good condition, no issues at all, and we knew it would make more but not as much as it did,” he said.
The pot, impressed with a monogram to the base, was in the auctioneers’ Welsh Sale – Ward has been based in Pembrokeshire since 1974 – of which more next week.
