1. The best-seller of two dozen pictures by Sudbury artist Paul Earee (1888-1968), this 20in x 2ft (51 x 62cm) oil on panel still-life doubled its top guide at Reeman Dansie of Colchester on April 10. Although regarded as Sudbury’s finest artist since Gainsborough, his work is not widely known commercially.

2. Norman Wilkinson (1878-1971) is best known for pictures of warships and his First World War ‘Dazzle Painting’ invention, but this 19 x 25in (48 x 63cm) oil on canvas of a mountainous river scene found good interest at Jones & Jacob of Watlington in Oxfordshire, where it more than doubled its top guide on April 11.

3. This 13 x 10in (33 x 26cm) oil on canvas, painted in 1869 by pioneering Etruscan School landscapist Nino Costa (1826-1903), tipped over its £350-450 guide at Mallams in Abingdon on April 9 – seemingly good value given that other similar depictions have sold in excess of £1000 and the artist holds an auction record in five figures.
