1 How did you get your start?

I was lucky enough to have a good idea of what I wanted to do ‘when I grew up’ from a pretty young age. I opened my first gallery in 2001, having just completed my MA and internships.

2 What was the first sale you made as Fiumano Clase?

It was in November 2017 to a young collector couple whom we’ve been friends with for years. They bought a contemporary Dadaist work, Channelling Baroness Von Dada Part 1, by Nicole Wassall at the launch party for our joint gallery.

What made this sale stand out was the fact that until this point, these collectors had never really bought anything substantial from either Andrés or me. I was delighted that they finally found the right piece to add to their extensive collection.

3 How has the trade changed since you started dealing?

There is a lot more online activity than in the early 2000s. In some ways this is a very positive thing and has democratised areas of the market.

But I have never wanted to operate more online than in the flesh.

4 What is an exhibition you would love to stage?

I am lucky that we only deal with artists we want to work with.

However, given the space and resources, I would stage a comparative show of well-known artists that have been labelled as ‘feminist’ during the past 40 years – people such as Judy Chicago, Anna Mendieta and Cindy Sherman, alongside emerging artists yet to get their voices heard.

5 Real ale or espresso martini?

Espresso martini – the best combination of caffeine and alcohol, often resulting in moments of inspiration sadly forgotten the next morning.
