A private library of polar exploration, travel and local history books is the focus of a single-owner sale at North Yorkshire saleroom Tennants on January 10.
The library was put together over many years by the late Roger Casson, an architect from north-east England who had a particular fascination with the golden age of polar exploration during the 19th and early 20th century. The category accounts for over 200 lots in the sale.
One of the most valuable lots is a limited edition of The Heart of the Antarctic, Being the Story of the British Antarctic Expedition 1907-1909 by the great polar explorer Ernest Shackleton. Published by Heinemann in 1909, the two-volume set, which includes two panoramas and three folding maps, in one of only 300 sets bound in vellum.

Although Amédée Julien Marcel-Clément (c.1873-1950) resided in Paris for virtually all his life, the artist only painted a relatively small number of pictures of his native city.
Instead, the majority of his subjects depict views of the French coast, and it is for these works, often dramatically lit and executed in a natural palette, that he is best known.
This 17¾ x 38¼in (45 x 97cm) oil on canvas titled Basse Mer Près du Cap Lihou (Granville) is priced at £28,000 from London art dealer Burlington and will be on its stand at The Mayfair Antiques & Fine Art Fair in Mayfair from January 10-13.
