Shell out for helmet

A highlight of the December 13 sale held by Tennants (18.5% buyer’s premium) in Leyburn was this 17th century lobsterpot helmet (below) at £1200.

Belgian pistols in Dorset

A pair of Belgian 19th century flintlock pistols which sold for £680 at Charterhouse (21% buyer’s premium) in Sherborne, on December 15. Both pistols were in working condition and one was stamped on the barrel with the maker’s mark for Anna Oesterlein.

Hit the sale target

This cased pair of 40-bore percussion target pistols by Williams & Powell, each with a 10in damascus octagonal sighted barrel and the breech with platinum line inlay inscribed Liverpool to top flat, sold for a mid-estimate £4000 at Southams (15% buyer’s premium) on December 7.

They came in a mahogany fitted case with cleaning tools, threeway powder flask, caps, nipple key, bullet mould and maker’s trade label ESP.

A pair of 54-bore duelling pistols by Durs Egg which sold in their modern transit case for £9400 at Anthony Cribb’s (20% buyer’s premium) sale near Abingdon on December 12.
