And at the southern end that includes the Northcote Road Antiques Market. Antiques dealer Helen Rix has managed this market since it opened in 1986 and handily owns an antiques shop 10 minutes away.

She said: “At least half of the 25 stallholders have been at the market for 25-30 years and show no signs of wanting to leave, so I assume they make a comfortable living.

“My problem has always been not having enough space to meet demand, rather than empty stalls.”

The market at 155a Northcote Road sells antiques including Art Nouveau and Deco pieces, plus vintage, retro and collectables, at prices from £5-5000, in “lots of small rooms under one roof”.

It is open seven days a week, with the nearest railway station at Clapham Junction.
