It is also one closely associated with New York’s firefighting service. The locations of each of the engine, hose and hook-and-ladder houses are shown, and the city is clearly divided into numbered fire districts by bold red lines.

Once a familiar sight in the city’s fire stations, it is now a great rarity and this example made $30,000 (£31,740) at Sotheby’s New York (25/20/12.9% buyer’s premium) on January 17.
