Catalogued as an ‘18th century oil on canvas of a saint (possibly St Jerome)’ and estimated at £150-250, the 21 x 16½in (53 x 42cm) work sold to a buyer on the phone after protracted bidding.
“It’s believed that this is a cut-down from a larger painting – to which we couldn’t confirm and there was no significant signature for us to warrant any further research on the painting,” said Ben Francis of London Auctions. The picture was consigned privately by a UK resident with no provenance to attribute to any artist, collection or movement, Francis added.
The pre-sale interest in the work and the subsequent sum it fetched suggests that more research will be done.
