A collection of Modern British art owned by the late art dealer Manya Igel (1923-2017) has been given a dedicated sale at Bonhams Knightsbridge on March 13.

Among the top lots is The Dressing Room, a 2ft 1in x 2ft 5in (64 x 76cm) oil on canvas by British painter Laura Knight (1877-1970) which is estimated at £30,000-50,000.

Originally from Lithuania, Igel moved to Danzig (known today as the Polish city of Gdansk) as a child but was forced to flee to London at the outbreak of the Second World War, catching the very last Kindertransport out of the city.

The rest of her family did not survive the war and she was forced to begin life in London alone. Igel often bought directly from artists and was a strong supporter of the 20th Century British Art Fair (now called the British Art Fair, as reported in News, ATG No 2328) from the start in 1988.
