A pair of George II walnut side chairs, made in the manner of Giles Grendey (1693-1780), will feature in a March 3 sale at Batemans in Stamford, estimated at £10,000-15,000.
The backs of both chairs are carved with shell crests above vase-shaped splats, while the seats are upholstered in 18th century gros and petit-point needlework. Shells with later gilding also feature on the carved cabriole legs, above claw and ball feet.
A Georgian mirror formerly in the collection of the famous Guinness family will be offered at Duke’s in Dorchester on February 22-23.
Made in the manner of the English wood carver and furniture maker Thomas Johnson (1714-78) and dating to the early reign of George III, the 7ft 11in x 3ft 6in (2.41 x 1.07m) giltwood rococo mirror hung at Farmleigh in Dublin. The residence was bought in 1873 by Edward Guinness (1847-1927), remaining in the family until it was sold to the Irish government in 1995.
The auction house describes the mirror in the catalogue note as a “tour de force, both in terms of scale and the execution of the design and carving”.

Eight 19in (48cm) high goblet-shaped Sicilian apothecary urns will feature in a sale of oak and vernacular objects at Wilkinson’s Auctioneers of Doncaster in South Yorkshire on February 25.
Still retaining original paintwork, the urns date from c.1790 and are labelled in Italian with ingredients for natural remedies such as cinnamon, orange, nettle, mint and pomegranate.
Estimate £5000-6000.
