This clock, made by the horologist George Graham (1673-1751), is a potential star of Woolley & Wallis’ Furniture Works of Art and Clocks sale on January 10 in Salisbury, estimated at £40,000-60,000.
The influential English clockmaker was partner to Thomas Tompion during the last few years of Tompion’s life. He is credited with several inventions, including the deadbeat escapement in 1713 and the mercury pendulum and cylinder escapement in 1726.
The brass eight-day walnut longcase clock, punch numbered 670, has a recoil anchor escapement, rack striking on a bell and a silvered dial with Roman numerals, and a subsidiary seconds dial and date aperture.
The case is thought to have been produced by Daniel Delander’s (d.1733) workshop. For many years, the clock was displayed at the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge alongside a Tompion.
