Completed in 1905, it was included in an exhibition of works by the artist, James Jebusa Shannon (1862-1923), at the Knoedler Gallery in New York in 1906.
A reviewer for the New York Times wrote that the dress “is vividly, richly wrought by clear deft strokes that sometimes make one think of Sargent”.
The 4ft 2in x 3ft 1in (1.27m x 94cm) oil on canvas was then exhibited alongside a portrait of the sitter’s mother. Now, however, it hangs among paintings by a number of other artists and covering a variety of genres. It is priced at $58,000.
The exhibition, which continues until August 17, includes a watercolour by JMW Turner: a reduced version of The Storm, which is now in the British Museum.
Also, a rediscovered painting by Jean- Léon Gérôme and a racehorse painting by Alfred Munnings.
A group of 55 oils and watercolours from the estate of Thomas Buford Meteyard (1865-1928), an American artist and expatriate, is also on display. This includes views of Paris and London as well as the coast of Massachusetts and Rye, Sussex, where Meteyard eventually settled.
The gallery, in a townhouse on 63rd Street off Lexington Avenue, specialises in European and American paintings from 1830-1930.
