This dynamic design by AM Cassandre (1901-68) above, advertising the French railway company, Étoile du Nord, is among the stars of an online vintage poster sale at Onslows on July 13.

The well-preserved 3ft 5in x 2ft 6in (1.04m x 75cm) poster was printed by Hachard & Cie in Paris in 1927 for Chemin de Fer du Nord and Compagnie Wagon-Lits.

After years of French railway posters depicting picturesque views or bathing ‘belles’, Cassandre broke with tradition by focusing on images of the train and the railway itself. This example was inherited by a US expat living in Spain and is estimated at £10,000-15,000.
