Like so many other artists, Walter Sickert (1860-1942) was drawn to Venice, painting the city’s much-loved landmarks time and again during his frequent trips at the turn of the 20th century.
The setting for this self-portrait, above, is the Campo SS Giovanni e Paolo in Venice and shows the equestrian statue of Bartolomeo Colleoni and the Scuola Grande di San Marco.
The signed 4½ x 3¾in (11.5 x 9.5cm) pen, ink and wash, dated 1987, will be offered at George Kidner of Lymington in Hampshire on July 26. It bears an inscription to the back that reads Given by John Grant Reid to Mr & Mrs A E Queening.

This 19½ x 23½in (50 x 60cm) Scottish oil of the Iona coastline by Charles Martin Hardie (1858- 1916) is guided at £2500-3000 in William George & Co’s timed auction of fine art finishing on August 12.
The carpenter-turned-painter became known for his pictures of Scottish life, producing portraits, landscapes and genre scenes as well as historical paintings in both oils and watercolour.

Two manuscript journals by the 19th century amateur photographer Thomas Child (1841-98) will be included in the W&H Peacock August 3 sale in Bedford.
Diary of my Voyage from London to Peking 1869-1870 and the first volume of Year’s Residence in China 1870 are guided together at £2000-3000.
Born in Shropshire, Child moved with his wife and children to Beijing in 1870, where he worked until 1889 as a gas engineer for the Imperial Chinese Maritime Customs. His photographs detailing the traditional architecture and monuments such as the Old Summer Palace and the Great Wall were sold commercially well into the 20th century.
This 15½ x 12½in (39 x 32cm) oil on board of a Flemish townscape was painted in 1824 by the English Romantic landscape painter, Richard Parkes Bonington (1802-28).
A contemporary of Eugène Delacroix, Bonington moved to France at the age of 14. He exhibited at the famous Paris Salon of 1824 with John Constable and Thomas Lawrence, where he won a gold medal.
A versatile artist, his range included history, landscape and subject paintings, while he also painted small historical cabinet paintings and was an early exponent of lithography. He died of tuberculosis at the age of 25.
Gerrards Auction Rooms will feature the lot in its two-day sale in Lytham St Annes in Lancashire on July 26-27, guided at £4000-5000.
