'Young man from Piraeus' by Yiannis Tsarouchis – £120,000 at Bonhams.
The 2ft 1in x 21in (65 x 53cm) oil on canvas portrays one of Tsarouchis’ signature male subjects – a working-class young man from the artist’s native port town of Piraeus.
It had the extra allure of being held in private hands ever since it had been acquired from the artist.
Tsarouchis is one of the major figures of the so-called ‘Generation of the ‘30s’ group of Greek artists, whose values have been rising on the secondary market.
